“Texas Shorty” joins Jana Jae for Labor Day Weekend Fiddle Camp

Grand Lake Festivals is proud to announce the addition of Jim “Texas Shorty” Chancellor to the roster of talented instructors participating in the 15th annual Jana Jae Fiddle Camp September 4, 5, and 6, in Grove, Oklahoma.  Chancellor plays a variety of instruments in all genres of music, but is most recognized for his long time success in the style of Texas Old Time Fiddling. He has won or placed in virtually every major fiddle competition in the United States including the Grand Lake National Fiddle Fest, the World Fiddling Championship, and the coveted Grand Master’s in Nashville. He has appeared with such greats as Sam Bush, John Hartford, Mark O’Connor and of course, Jana Jae. Evening activities take place at Snider’s Camp on Friday and Saturday evenings, with daytime sessions Saturday and Sunday held in the air-conditioned comfort of the Grove Civic Center.  It all begins at Snider's Camp, 6:30 p.m. Friday, September 4, with the Kick-Off Party and Bar BQ Dinner, great entertainment and lots of campground jamming.  The popular Fish Fry Dinner with all the trimmings plus entertainment and the Amateur Fiddle Contest will take place on Saturday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Bring your lawn chairs and relax on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees while enjoying all the activities planned for your enjoyment by host, Jana Jae and volunteers of Grand Lake Festivals, Inc.  Entertainment is free, food is $8 a plate.  Sniders’ Camp is located 1 mile south and ½ mile east of Honey Creek Bridge in Grove, OK.

 

During the day on Saturday and Sunday, 20 outstanding master fiddlers help participants work on different aspects of fiddle playing such as bowing and fingering techniques, and different styles of music including contest fiddling.  Texas Shorty will provide instruction on tunes that incorporate the techniques of Texas style fiddling and assist in applying such methods to all tunes played.  Workshops in flatpick guitar, contest back-up guitar, mandolin, viola and fiddle harmonies are also available during the camp sessions.  The Amateur Fiddle Contest, held on Saturday night at Snider’s Camp is a great opportunity for the students to become more comfortable on stage, in front of an audience, as well as learning more about the art of playing successfully in a contest.  Workshops, master demonstrations, group sessions, special appearances by fiddle groups, master fiddlers and top contest fiddlers round out a weekend full of fun, learning, meeting old and new friends and enjoying great music.  Mark your calendars for September 4, 5, & 6 to participate in this exciting weekend.
