Grand Lake Chamber Article for 08-05-2010 Chronicle

The Heat is On!

The Heat is on, as the song goes, and that has lead to many of us just floating in the Pond with our favorite beverage and a big hat to stay as cool in the triple digit Days.  The lake has enjoyed a great vacation season that will soon wrap up as students prepare to return to their studies for another academic year.

TOUR COUNTS

We are getting ever closer to that record number of tours given by the staff here at the Ecosystem and Education Center right by the dam. As of this past Sunday Forest recorded a count of 6891 folks that come to learn all about the structure and history of the Pensacola Project that will have a 70th birthday this month. The visitors from other countries are holding at fifteen and still at 43 states represented. Sunday even with the high heat they had 69 persons go on the rather warm tour. And in the small world category we had some OKC friends stop by the chamber office and while we were catching up one of their cousins came for a tour and they had not seen each other for two years. You never know how will be at Grand Lake.

TEAM SIGN UP TIME

Now is the time for all of good Catfish cooks to get their team organized and signed up for the next Hook N’ Cookoff. The date is September 25th and will again be held at Pelican Landing on Duck Creek. The entry fee pays for all the fish your group needs to cook and prizes will be awarded for not only the catfish but also Hush Puppies and Cole Slaw.  This year with the help of Clanton’s Café owner Dennis Patrick we are doing to have car show with real trophies and real judges. You can enter your special car project for only $10.00 and show Grand Lake how hard work can pay off on a hobby. Call the office for information on this 17th annual and 9th National Catfish Cookoff.  Tickets will be available soon to get a tasting kit to enjoy all of the teams good cooking.  918-782-3214

MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEON

This month we are moving around the lakes for our next networking and education meeting and going to The Lake Hudson Inn just on the West side of the new Strang bridge.  They have left the old bridge up see we can see how scary it was. Our education part will be presented by the Corporation Commission on the changes to the 918 area code.  The date is August 26th and will start at 11:30 AM and the cost is $10.00 per person at the door and $12.00 if we need to bill you. Call for reservations so Johnny and the crew can have enough food for us to enjoy.  918-782-3214
