Grand Lake Chamber Article 08-26-2010

They say the heat will break this week and get down to the mid 90’s instead of the 100”s. That doesn’t mean your gardens will come back to life; we will need a good rain for that to happen.  It is always a delicate balance here at Grand: if we get rain we don’t get visitors and if we get rain, gardens stay green.  Visiting with some friends yesterday afternoon and they suggested the Farmer’s Almanac was the best way to tell what the weather is going to be like in the coming months.  I know this must be right coming from a good Kansas girl!

HOOK N‘COOKOFF

The teams are signing up for this year’s big event on September 25th at Pelican Landing.  So far we have 5 teams ready to go and they are representing: Scooter’s, Waters Edge Resort, Terry’s NDN’s, Mayes County sheriff’s office and 3 Old Smokers.  I saw the 3 Old Smokers on TV Saturday morning, they were in Tulsa cooking for another good cause and having fun.  We are also signing up vendors to bring all their good stuff to sell during the event that includes:  Monkey Island Pottery, Festival Lights, Cuzzin Vinny’s Italian Ice, Summerside Winery, R&L Furniture, and Bob Delp Magnetic Jewelry.  So if you have stuff to offer the public, for a mere $50.00 you can set up a tent and expose you self to almost 2,000 people at one time.  We place the vendors between the catfish cookers so while they are waiting in line they can buy your offerings.

Tickets will be ready soon that can be purchased in advance and save a dollar at the Chamber office or from one of the cooking teams.  The cost for a tasting kit is $7.00 and for kids only $5.00.  The gates will open at 9:30 AM and the tasting of the catfish, Hush Puppies and Cole Slaw will start at 11:30 AM, with the entertainment from Lickety Split.  Kristen Dickerson from the Channel 8 morning show will be on hand to visit with the folks and will be handing out the awards around 2:00 PM.

This year we are really stepping up our car show with the help of Dennis Patrick of Clanton’s Café, who puts on one of the biggest car displays in the area.  For a small entry fee you will be able to display your pride and joy and we have judging from professional folks that know which is the best.  Each car that enters will get 2 tasting kits to enjoy all the good cooking.  This is a bargain, if you bring your car to show off it will only be $10.00 and that will save you $6.00 if you pay at the gate.

The Lion’s Club of South Grand Lake will be bringing the good ole Brown beans and fried potatoes this year as another taste treat for all to enjoy.  So make plans now to come for a great fun day for the whole family.  For more information call the Chamber office 918-782-3214.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND

The last of the three big weekends for lake fun is just around the corner and if you haven't booked your room or rented that boat, they will be hard to get.  With all the extra folks coming to enjoy the lake we hope everyone will pay close attention to traffic on land and water, we need everyone safe for this holiday.

HAVE A GREAT GRAND DAY!
